Is foam recyclable?
There are many different types of foam materials. Most of the foam is recyclable. It all depends on the type of foam and the recycling technique.
Virtually all plastic materials – including foam - are created using materials made from fossil fuels, such as gas and oil. The extraction and transportation of these fuels and manufacturing them to create plastic products results in billions of tons of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
The increasing demand for plastic materials significantly impacts the environment and global climate. So,it is our urgent task to recycle these foam wastes and make a clean world.
What types of foam are recyclable?
EPS/XPS foam
Recycling EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) and XPS (Extruded Polystyrene) foam can be challenging due to their lightweight and bulky nature.
Shredding: The sorted foam is shredded into smaller pieces by EPS shredder. This increases the surface area and makes it easier to process in subsequent steps.
Densification: The shredded foam is then densified using machines that compress the material into dense blocks or pellets. This process reduces the volume of the foam significantly, making it more economical to transport and process.
Reprocessing: The densified foam can be melted down and reprocessed into new products. This can include creating new EPS/XPS products, insulation materials, or even plastic lumber.
Manufacturing New Products: The recycled material can be used in various applications by its recycled PS granules from EPS granulator, such as packaging materials, construction insulation, and other products that require lightweight and insulating properties.
EPE foam
EPE packaging foams are fed into grinding machines to cut them into smaller pieces
A machine compresses the cut materials to create solid, dense blocks
The densified EPE is sold to various manufacturers for reprocessing to create new products.
The reprocessing involves grinding, melting, and cutting the densified EPE into smaller pieces, which are recycled and made into new products.
XLPE
XLPE cable (Cross-linked polyethylene) is a type of electrical cable commonly used for power transmission and distribution.
The XLPE recycling process follows three fundamental steps:
First, the XLPE packaging foam products are cleaned, dried, and ground up in a grinding machine
Recyclers then add other accessories (such as recycled polyethylene, colouring agents, emollients, and fillers) to the crushed XLPE waste
The kneaded ingredients are extruded to produce plastic strips and tablets that are ideal materials for manufacturing cable filler pipes used in construction, low-voltage electrical accessories, and other civilian products.
Is styrofoam biodegradable?
While styrofoam technically does break down into smaller pieces, it is not a natural material and thus cannot be broken down by microorganisms. Because styrofoam is a polystyrene-based product, it will never fully decompose and instead will remain in a landfill for hundreds of years.
